Mistral AI on September 8, 2026 announced a €3 billion Series D funding round at a post-money valuation of more than €21 billion, the largest equity fundraising ever completed by a European technology company. Samsung Electronics led the round, co-led by the Scaleup Europe Fund managed by EQT and by existing investor PSG Equity, with new capital from Advent, funds and accounts managed by BlackRock and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Sovereign Full-Stack Bet
Three years after launch, the Paris company positions Mistral as the only AI firm building the full sovereign stack — open-weight models, the infrastructure and compute they run on, and the products that push them into production. Chief executive Arthur Mensch said the funding will "significantly expand" frontier research, scale training capacity and accelerate international commercial growth. Mistral now operates across 20 countries and counts more than 125 enterprises — including ASML, Airbus and HSBC — as mission-critical customers.
Who Wrote The Checks
The syndicate stitches together strategic hyperscalers, sovereigns and top-tier growth funds. New backers Samsung Electronics, EQT and PSG Equity join a returning cast of a16z, ASML, NVIDIA, Salesforce Ventures, DST Global, General Catalyst, Bpifrance, Index Ventures, Lightspeed, Korelya Capital, Eurazeo, Headline, Hillspire, BNP Paribas CIB, Belfius and Carmignac. The mix reflects Mistral's positioning across advanced manufacturing (ASML), consumer electronics (Samsung), industrial capital (EQT) and enterprise SaaS (Salesforce).
Sovereign AI Becomes The Selling Point
The Samsung endorsement follows Mistral's Series C led by ASML earlier this year and a multi-billion-dollar Microsoft Azure deployment agreement in July. Governments and regulated enterprises are increasingly asking not who trained the biggest model, but who can operate the entire loop — data, weights, compute and product — inside their own boundaries. Mistral's pitch, echoed by rivals like Anthropic and OpenAI, is that sovereign control is now a product feature, not a compliance headache.
