Berlin-based Nanolope has closed an €800,000 pre-seed round to develop high-density thermal-energy-storage materials that can be embedded directly into buildings, HVAC systems and industrial processes. The bet is that thermal storage does not have to live inside a tank or a lithium battery — if the walls, floors and heat loops themselves can absorb and release heat over long cycles, structures become part of the flexibility layer that grids increasingly need as renewable penetration climbs.
Phase-change chemistry for a grid-flex problem
Nanolope's approach centres on next-generation phase-change materials engineered for higher enthalpy per litre and more stable cycling than paraffin- or salt-hydrate-based products already on the market. Integrated into gypsum panels, plaster layers or HVAC loops, they can shift daytime cooling loads or store off-peak heat pump output for later release, capturing arbitrage from time-varying tariffs without shifting the electrical topology of the building. The company sits inside a broader macro trend: as solar generation swells in the middle of the day and grids struggle at both dawn and dusk, thermal storage is emerging as one of the cheapest ways to time-shift building energy demand.
Where the pre-seed lands
Pre-seed rounds are early technical bets rather than commercial signals. Nanolope will need to prove enthalpy density, thermal-conductivity trade-offs and long-cycle stability before serious construction customers commit — a slower iteration cycle than a software startup, but with a defensible moat if the chemistry works. It joins a recent European deep-tech cohort focused on turning physical materials into grid assets, alongside Greenvolt's €218M Poland BESS package and CivilGrid's underground-infrastructure data play.
Why this bet matters now
Building-integrated storage has been talked about for two decades, but the economics finally line up: heat-pump adoption is accelerating in Europe, grid-flex tariffs are proliferating and construction codes across Germany, the UK and the Nordics increasingly reward embodied-carbon and thermal-performance metrics.
