OpenAI has connected ChatGPT Health to Epic Systems' electronic health record, opening the door for clinicians at hospitals covering more than 325 million patients to pull chart data directly into a ChatGPT workspace and get AI-generated summaries at the point of care. The company announced the integration on September 1.
Read-Only Access, With Chat In The Chart
Once a health system enables the integration, clinicians can import appointment notes, lab results, medication lists and specialist documentation from Epic and ask ChatGPT to synthesize the record, surface changes over time or prepare a pre-visit briefing. OpenAI stressed the connection is read-only: the model cannot write back to the chart. In supported deployments, ChatGPT can also be embedded inside Epic's own screens so AI-assisted workflows never force a clinician out of the patient view.
A Healthcare Public Data Plug-In Comes With It
Alongside the Epic hook, OpenAI released a Healthcare Public Data plug-in that queries nine reference sources including PubMed, DailyMed, CMS Coverage, RxNorm and ClinicalTrials.gov. The company frames the tool as a way for research and payer teams to check trial eligibility criteria, medication identifiers, coverage-policy versions and provider records in one workspace rather than juggling separate portals.
Safety Numbers, And The Cases That Still Worry Regulators
OpenAI said it collected more than 4,300 physician ratings across 27 clinical scenarios - pre-visit review, medication reconciliation, handoff summaries and clinical timeline building - and that 99.1% of the model's responses were rated safe. Even at that hit rate, the residual tail worries clinicians: OpenAI is facing wrongful-death and near-fatal-advice complaints tied to prior consumer ChatGPT interactions, and the company has repeatedly said the model is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.
Organizations with a Business Associate Agreement will also be able to use ChatGPT Work, Codex, apps and connectors inside HIPAA-scoped workspaces. The rollout arrives weeks after OpenAI opened consumer ChatGPT Health to all U.S. users; it says people now send it roughly 300 million health-related queries a week.
