UK hydrogen engineering firm Fuel Cell Systems Limited (FCS) signed a design-and-build agreement with HyHAUL Mobility for what the pair describe as the largest hydrogen refuelling system ever assembled in Britain for heavy goods vehicles.
The station
The commercially funded refuelling site will dispense hydrogen at both 350 bar and 700 bar, allowing it to serve legacy tube-trailer fleets and next-generation 700 bar fuel cell tractors from OEMs like Hyundai and Daimler. FCS says the station will be able to refill up to 30 HGVs a day — meaningful throughput in a UK market where most existing hydrogen sites can barely feed a delivery van.
Why HyHAUL matters
HyHAUL is one of the demonstration consortiums bankrolled by the UK's Zero Emission HGV programme. Its goal is to prove that hydrogen fuel cell trucks can operate a long-haul duty cycle with the same uptime as diesel, and to build enough refuelling capacity along the M4 corridor to make that pilot commercially viable. A high-throughput FCS-built station is the missing link — it is hard to buy fuel cell trucks if you cannot fuel them.
Where this fits
The deal lands as hydrogen-truck economics get another push from OEM alliances covered in Siltrax's Americas push and Toyota/IVECO's EU-funded EMPOWER programme. Combined with battery-electric heavy-truck news like NeoVolta's LFP deal with SK On, Britain's zero-emission freight stack is finally starting to look plausible.
What comes next
FCS will kick off detailed engineering immediately with the target of commissioning the station in 2027. HyHAUL will then match the site with an initial 30-truck fleet operated by consortium haulier Reynolds Logistics, with additional stations planned along the M4.
