Plug Power (NASDAQ: PLUG) said Monday it will ship a 1 MW GenEco™ PEM electrolyzer to HWR Hydrogen in Invercargill, New Zealand, extending the U.S. hydrogen specialist’s footprint across New Zealand and Australia and feeding a new refueling station for dual-fuel heavy-transport trucks.
A South Island Beachhead
HWR Hydrogen, a division of the H.W. Richardson Group, will use the electrolyzer to make green hydrogen on site for its truck fleet. “Bringing Plug equipment and capabilities to Invercargill is about proving out a model we can extend across the South Island as adoption grows,” said Gareth Wishart, HWR’s general manager for technology and innovation. The system pairs with a Hiringa Energy refueling network already operating on the North Island.
Bookended By A 50 MW Australian Project
The NZ ship-out lands as Plug is also progressing a much larger 50 MW GenEco system for Orica’s Hunter Valley Hydrogen Hub in New South Wales, Australia, aimed at industrial decarbonization. Together, the two projects give Plug a distributed-plus-industrial reference story in a region still short of gigawatt-scale electrolyzer deployments.
What This Signals For Plug
“Plug is building a strong presence alongside this emerging market, with the technology and experience to support projects at every scale,” CEO José Luis Crespo said. The GenEco family, based on PEM stacks, has been Plug’s primary vehicle for shifting from fuel cell hardware into upstream hydrogen production — a strategic pivot investors have been watching after 2025’s cash burn concerns.
