Chinese autonomous-driving specialist Pony.ai and GAC Commercial Vehicle used IAA Transportation 2026 in Hannover to unveil a jointly developed Gen-4 Level 4 heavy-duty robotruck built on the battery-electric GAC T9 platform, marking one of the year's most concrete steps toward driverless long-haul freight in Europe.
A Cost-Reduced Level 4 Platform
The two partners, who formalized their cooperation on April 16 this year, say the seventh-generation autonomous-driving kit that powers the truck delivers a 70% cost cut versus the previous Pony.ai stack while adding full redundancy across braking, steering, power supply, communications, computing and sensing. The sensor payload comprises nine lidars, three millimetre-wave radars and 13 cameras stitched into a 360-degree perception ring, feeding a compute platform tuned for freeway cruising, port shuttles and dedicated-route logistics.
An aerodynamic coefficient of 0.4 combined with an EV drivetrain is expected to trim energy consumption by roughly 10% versus a comparable diesel truck, and to slash per-tonne-kilometre transport costs by an estimated 30%. Pony.ai co-founder and CEO James Peng framed the truck as the industry's first Level 4 model designed from the outset for volume production and international deployment.
From Hannover To Europe And The Middle East
GAC and Pony.ai plan to begin volume production of the Gen-4 platform later in 2026 and to enter European and Middle Eastern markets within two years. The launch tightens Pony.ai's Level 4 push across trucks, robotaxis and robotic delivery: the company recently began fully driverless robotaxi service with Verne in Zagreb and set a 2027 launch window with Waymo and Nihon Kotsu in Tokyo.
Europe's Freight Race Heats Up
The Hannover reveal comes as European regulators warm to Level 4 goods vehicles and as Pony.ai's rivals accelerate their own overseas expansion plans. The company has previously outlined a pipeline of more than 4,000 robotaxis for markets outside China, and its Gen-4 Robotruck now gives GAC a technology bridge into commercial-vehicle exports at a moment when Chinese OEMs face rising tariffs on passenger EVs.
