Project Prometheus Jeff Bezos AI manufacturing acquisition

Project Prometheus, the stealth physical AI lab co-founded by Jeff Bezos and former Google scientist Vik Bajaj, has quietly acquired General Agents, an early-stage startup building agentic computing systems that can take over a desktop and automate multi-application workflows. The deal, surfaced this week and confirmed by people familiar with the matter, gives Prometheus an immediate path to integrate computer-use agents with the world models it is training for manufacturing, aerospace and chip design.

What Prometheus is building

Prometheus came out of stealth in late 2025 and remains light on public detail. People briefed on the company describe its core thesis as combining physics-based world models with multi-modal agents that can plan and execute complex industrial tasks - from CAD modifications to factory line reconfiguration. The General Agents acquisition fills in the computer-control layer, letting Prometheus models drive existing enterprise software rather than asking customers to rip and replace.

$10 billion at a $38 billion valuation

The acquisition follows the Bloomberg-reported $10 billion mega-round Prometheus closed in April at a $38 billion valuation, with JPMorgan Chase and BlackRock among the participating investors. The company had previously been seeded with roughly $6.2 billion in commitments from Bezos and his co-founder. The expanded balance sheet has underwritten an aggressive hiring sprint, with senior researchers joining from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, Meta and xAI over the past two quarters.

Talent and the San Francisco expansion

In early June, Bajaj hosted an off-the-record AI dinner at Saison in San Francisco that included a late addition from DeepMind and Tesla, underscoring a recruiting push that has unsettled rival labs. Prometheus is also expanding its San Francisco office to add hundreds of researchers, complementing existing teams in Seattle and the Bay Area. The hiring is focused on world models, reinforcement learning and robotics-adjacent simulation.

Why this matters for physical AI

The General Agents purchase is a relatively small acqui-hire by Prometheus' standards, but it signals how the company is approaching the physical AI stack: own the model layer, own the data layer, and own the action layer that connects AI back to the existing software of record. The strategy contrasts with vertically integrated humanoid OEMs like Apptronik and software-only players like Skild AI, both of which have raised at multi-billion-dollar valuations this year.
