Oxford spin-out QuantrolOx has been named the first industry anchor of the University of California, Berkeley's newly launched Roger Herst Quantum Nexus, signing a five-year memorandum of understanding announced on September 9, 2026 to give the startup its first dedicated North American base.
What the MOU covers
Under the agreement, QuantrolOx will integrate its Quantum EDGE control and calibration software with Berkeley's quantum processing units, automating the qubit tuning workflows that today soak up postdoc time in academic labs. In exchange, Berkeley researchers will get early access to QuantrolOx's algorithms and QuantrolOx will get real-world benchmarks on Berkeley's Rigetti, IBM and University-built hardware.
Why this matters
Calibration is arguably the quietest bottleneck in quantum computing. Modern superconducting devices can drift out of specification within hours, and the manual tuning process is expensive and slow. QuantrolOx's founders — a mix of Oxford physicists and machine-learning engineers — pitch Quantum EDGE as the equivalent of a compiler for qubit control: a software layer that abstracts away the drift.
Berkeley's quantum push
The Quantum Nexus, launched earlier this year and named for donor Roger Herst, aims to be a west-coast counterweight to east-coast quantum hubs. Berkeley is layering it on top of existing partnerships with LBNL and the National Quantum Initiative, echoing similar consolidation moves like the IBM/Lockheed/ETH Zurich Swiss Quantum Hub and Pasqal's MOU with LG CNS.
What comes next
QuantrolOx will spin up a Bay Area office by year-end and staff it with control-systems engineers hired jointly with Berkeley. The company says it will publish benchmark results from Berkeley hardware in Q1 2027 and plans to extend Quantum EDGE to trapped-ion platforms next year.
