Rocket Lab (Nasdaq: RKLB) unveiled GHOST on August 10, 2026, a containerized launch system built to move complete Electron and HASTE launch sites anywhere in the world.
What GHOST Is
Short for Global Hypersonic & Orbital Spaceport Technology, GHOST packages complete rockets, launch infrastructure, ground support and range-control systems into standard shipping containers. Because Electron and HASTE share ground infrastructure, each GHOST kit can service both vehicles, giving Rocket Lab a dual-launch capability from any deployed site.
First Stop: Kodiak
The debut GHOST deployment, dubbed Launch Complex 4, will stand up at the Pacific Spaceport Complex on Kodiak Island, Alaska, with two pads planned for high-frequency campaigns. That takes Rocket Lab's total pad count to six across two hemispheres, alongside Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand and Launch Complexes 2 and 3 in Virginia. The maiden GHOST mission is set for a suborbital launch from Alaska in 2027.
National Security Play
Founder and CEO Sir Peter Beck framed the system around missile-defense and responsive-space demand: "GHOST is the answer to launching anywhere, anytime, and without compromise." It extends earlier wins such as Rocket Lab's record $266M Space Force missile-defense contract and its $397M Flatellite award for the Space-Based Airborne Moving Target Indicator program.
Why It Matters
Deployable spaceports have long been an ambition of the small-lift industry; GHOST is the first credible commercial offering to move beyond concept renders, and it aligns with Pentagon and allied-nation appetite for sovereign, on-demand access to orbit. It also broadens the mission profile for Neutron, Rocket Lab's forthcoming reusable medium-lift vehicle referenced in the same announcement.
