A discarded upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket slammed into the Moon near Einstein Crater at roughly 5,400 mph early on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, ending more than 18 months of uncontrolled flight and delivering a rare high-velocity impact experiment to planetary scientists.
An accidental lunar impact
The roughly four-tonne stage, catalogued as 2025-010D, was left drifting after a January 2025 Falcon 9 launch that deployed Firefly Aerospace’s Blue Ghost-1 and ispace’s Hakuto-R Mission 2 landers. Because the heavy payload consumed most of the available propellant, the second stage never received a controlled disposal burn and eventually drifted onto a trajectory intercepting the Moon. NASA and independent trackers pegged the impact at about 2:35 a.m. ET, releasing energy equivalent to roughly three tonnes of TNT.
What the crater will teach scientists
NASA estimates the strike carved a crater roughly 18 metres across and 4 metres deep, with some independent estimates reaching 30 metres. Boston University astronomer Carl Schmidt said his team is “100% certain” that ground observations captured the moment, while the European Southern Observatory reported spectral lines of sodium and lithium in the debris plume that lingered for 5–10 minutes.

NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and Korea Pathfinder Lunar Orbiter will image the site in the coming weeks, giving researchers before-and-after data that can be compared with the object’s known mass, velocity and trajectory — a rare opportunity to calibrate lunar surface models.
The debate over lunar debris
Similar accidental impacts have happened before, including a suspected Chinese upper stage in 2022, but this event lands as the pace of lunar activity accelerates. Bill Gray, the astronomer who first predicted the trajectory, called the episode a warning that commercial operators are not always held to the same disposal standards as government missions such as NASA’s Artemis program or ESA’s lunar science flights.
