Stryker (NYSE: SYK) said on September 1, 2026 that surgeons at Duke Health completed the first-ever surgical procedure — a hip arthroscopy — using SportSuite Vision on Apple Vision Pro. The app received FDA De Novo authorization on July 17, making it the first application in the world cleared for intraoperative use on Apple's spatial computing headset and moving mixed-reality surgery from research labs into a certified commercial workflow.
Multiple monitors, collapsed into one field of view
SportSuite Vision brings arthroscopic video plus Stryker's HipCheck and HipMap planning tools and CT imaging into a customizable Vision Pro workspace. During arthroscopic hip procedures, surgeons traditionally rely on several fixed monitors scattered around the OR; the app collapses those streams into a single ergonomic layout the surgeon can pin, reposition and see alongside physical objects in the sterile field. Matt Moreau, VP and GM of Stryker's Sports Medicine business, framed it as "a new chapter in digital surgery" and a step toward a "truly connected digital OR".
Duke Health takes the first case
The first live case was performed by orthopedic surgeon Chad Mather III, M.D., M.B.A., at Duke Health. Mather said the ability to customize where clinical information sits — and keep it inside the sterile field — helped him work through a hip arthroscopy without breaking eye contact with the patient. The FDA's De Novo pathway, used because there is no substantially equivalent legally marketed device, effectively creates a new regulated category for AR head-mounted intraoperative displays; SportSuite Vision's clearance is limited to femoroacetabular impingement and labral repair hip arthroscopy, but Stryker's language points to a broader Vision-Pro-enabled roadmap across its Sports Medicine business.
Spatial computing lands in the OR after a year of near-misses
The launch pulls Apple Vision Pro into the same medical-robotics conversation as recent product moves from Stryker's Mako RPS handheld knee robot, and stands alongside enterprise AR bets like Eclipse Automation's RealitySync factory platform. It also marks the first FDA nod for Vision Pro in a surgical context since Apple positioned the headset for enterprise workloads in early 2024, and it lands the same week the market has been chewing on Norbert Health's $14M Series A for autonomous nursing robots — a sign that AI, spatial computing and surgical robotics are converging on the same clinical workflow.
