Toyota Motor and Italy's IVECO Group unveiled a joint development programme targeting a next-generation hydrogen fuel cell electric heavy truck, plugging into the EU-funded EMPOWER project. Validation and road testing of the Toyota-powered FCEV are scheduled to begin in Q4 2026.
Inside the partnership
Toyota is supplying its second-generation fuel cell stack — the same modular unit destined for its Mirai passenger sedan and Hino heavy-duty prototypes — while IVECO integrates it into an S-Way based tractor chassis. The EMPOWER consortium is providing part of the funding and coordinating cross-border route validation across France, Germany and Italy.
Why now
Battery-electric trucks dominate short-haul, but weight penalties still make them tough for long-distance freight. Hydrogen fuel cells, in theory, can match diesel on range and payload while providing quicker refuelling. The Toyota-IVECO team says the joint FCEV will target more than 700 km of range on a single fill and support 40-tonne gross combination weight.
Where this fits
The partnership matches an emerging pattern of paired chassis-and-stack collaborations — see Hyundai's XCIENT deployments in California and the FCS/HyHAUL UK station buildout — that are creating the fuelling and vehicle pieces needed for hydrogen freight to move beyond demonstration. The Toyota alliance also complements electrification bets by Waymo and its OEM partners on the passenger side.
What comes next
Following Q4 2026 initial validation, the partners plan to enter a real-world logistics pilot with select European fleet customers in 2027. IVECO will handle commercial vehicle certification while Toyota is on the hook for stack durability and hydrogen consumption targets.
