XPENG has commissioned its long-teased humanoid robot production line in Guangzhou, with the flagship IRON android completing assembly and autonomously walking off the line on Tuesday morning, September 8, 2026. The Chinese EV maker said the site is the world's first automated production line built for advanced general-purpose humanoids and marks the shift from R&D prototypes to true manufacturing.

Automotive-grade quality meets humanoid assembly

XPENG says more than 80% of the line's core processes are automated, borrowing quality-management systems from its smart electric vehicle plants and layering them onto humanoid-scale precision assembly. Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng, who watched IRON walk off the line at the commissioning event, said the robot production lines "were created from scratch with no precedent to follow," and that XPENG will keep pushing for shorter cycle times and larger volumes.

Mass production still slated for year-end

The company was careful to say the commissioning is not the same as mass production. XPENG reiterated that volume output will begin by the end of 2026, with the first units deployed inside its own retail stores and campuses, followed by an official IRON launch and paid deliveries in China and overseas markets in 2027. Pricing and total line capacity were not disclosed.

IRON, Turing chips and the Dogotix carve-out

The next-generation IRON, unveiled in November 2025, packs 76 degrees of freedom across its body and 21 in each hand, with a fully enclosed flexible lattice structure that XPENG says balances human-like appearance with safety. Three in-house Turing AI chips deliver up to 2,250 TOPS on the robot, enough to run XPENG's physical AI foundation model on-device without leaning on cloud inference. The manufacturing news comes just two weeks after XPENG carved out its humanoid unit as Dogotix with a $900M funding round led by IDG Capital, Alibaba and Tencent, valuing the business at about $6.3 billion. It also follows reports that IRON is shifting to semi-solid batteries as fully solid-state cells slip.

China's humanoid factory race gets a marker

The Guangzhou commissioning lands as Chinese peers race to industrialise the same category. UBTech has already started shipping its UWORLD U1 companion humanoid, AgiBot is demoing the A3 abroad and preparing a Hong Kong IPO. XPENG's advantage, He argued, is transposing lessons from car plants — supply chain leverage, in-house silicon, and quality control — onto a category still dominated by hand-built demo units.
