France's Commissariat à l'Énergie Atomique (CEA) and Paris-based quantum startup Alice & Bob announced a research and integration partnership on September 17, 2026 that will wire the startup's cat-qubit hardware into Qaptiva, the Bull-designed quantum application platform. The goal: give developers a single, Europe-first stack to run hybrid quantum-classical workloads.
One code base, two computer types
Under the deal, Alice & Bob's systems will plug into Qaptiva, allowing code to be written once and executed on classical supercomputers or on Alice & Bob's quantum processors. The two organisations will co-develop compilers, error-mitigation software and orchestration layers, with an initial research focus on many-body physics — a class of problems relevant to material science and chemistry.
Both sides are unambiguous about the strategic subtext: Qaptiva is being positioned as Europe's answer to NVIDIA's CUDA-Q framework, which is now open source and quickly becoming the default glue between GPUs and quantum accelerators.
Alice & Bob's cat-qubit bet
Alice & Bob builds superconducting quantum processors that use "cat qubits" to suppress one of two dominant qubit error modes at the hardware level. The company claims the approach can reduce error-correction overhead by up to 200x versus conventional transmon designs. Its second-generation Helium 1 chip was unveiled in June 2026 and will be the first Alice & Bob machine installed on CEA premises, with delivery targeted for 2027 and a first fault-tolerant system by roughly 2030.
Europe's quantum-HPC stack takes shape
The Alice & Bob–CEA partnership is one of several efforts pulling European quantum companies into national HPC estates. It sits alongside IQM's Lumi-Q integration with CSC Kajaani, Riverlane's FPGA error-correction alliance and other cross-industry deals working towards fault-tolerant machines. No financial terms were disclosed.
The next 12 months
Alice & Bob COO Chloé Poisbeau said the priority "is to make Alice & Bob's unique FTQC technology usable in environments where real computational work happens". Expect first pilot workloads on Qaptiva-linked Alice & Bob systems to focus on chemistry benchmarks that today's classical HPC systems still cannot solve efficiently — the sweet spot where cat-qubit machines could deliver early utility.
