IQM Quantum Computers (Nasdaq: IQMX) on September 10, 2026 unveiled a three-step upgrade path to deploy Europe's first superconducting logical-qubit system at CSC's LUMI AI Factory in Kajaani, culminating in a nine-logical-qubit Halocene H5 in 2029.

IQM Quantum Computers (Nasdaq: IQMX) on September 10, 2026 announced LUMI-IQ, a phased superconducting quantum computer that will become Europe's first system designed from the outset to operate with logical qubits. The machine will be hosted by CSC – IT Center for Science in its Kajaani, Finland data centre and jointly funded by the EuroHPC Joint Undertaking with Finland, Czechia, Norway and Poland.

Three steps to fault tolerance

The Halocene roadmap starts in 2027 with an IQM Halocene H4 system carrying roughly 150 physical qubits and early quantum error correction. A 2028 upgrade lowers logical error rates and adds real-time correction. The final IQM Halocene H5 installation in 2029 introduces fast real-time feedback, lattice surgery and T-gate teleportation, sustaining up to nine logical qubits under distance-3 surface and colour codes — and encoding logical qubits up to distance 11 with the surface code.

Why logical qubits matter

Logical qubits combine many physical qubits through error correction to unlock the longer circuits that real quantum applications need. That makes the LUMI-IQ delivery an unusually concrete European answer to the IonQ Superion and Walking Cat milestones that trapped-ion competitors have logged in recent weeks.

Plugging quantum into the LUMI AI Factory

LUMI-IQ will sit inside the wider LUMI AI Factory, giving European researchers a hybrid HPC + AI + quantum stack in one facility. IQM CEO Jan Goetz argued the upgradeable architecture lets CSC "integrate the system into their own AI and HPC infrastructure" instead of buying — and rebuying — standalone machines. CSC CEO Kimmo Koski added that mixing logical qubits with AI orchestration is what will unlock "new forms of scientific workloads that combine traditional simulation, machine learning, and quantum algorithms."

Where this fits

The announcement stacks on top of Europe's Pasqal-LG CNS pact and Swiss Nighthawk hub from the same week, and gives IQM a public reference customer as it competes for enterprise superconducting deployments with IBM and PsiQuantum.
