Amazon Prime Air is preparing to add greater Richmond, Virginia to its growing autonomous drone-delivery footprint. The e-commerce giant confirmed plans to serve “Henrico County, Greater Richmond and Hanover County” through Prime Air, and held a community open house at Richmond Raceway on August 27 to walk residents through the program.
How The Richmond Service Will Work
Deliveries will fly out of Amazon's RIC4 fulfillment centre just northwest of Richmond Raceway, with eligible drop-off points required to sit within a 7.5-mile radius. Prime Air says its coverage areas typically span about 175 square miles per hub.
Customers can pick drone as a delivery option at checkout and choose a drop-off point on their property. Amazon says more than 60% of the items most frequently purchased on its store — electronics, groceries, household products and cosmetics that fit in a large shoebox and weigh five pounds or less — are eligible. Orders can arrive in as little as 30 minutes, with most within an hour. Drone delivery is free for Prime members on orders of $50 or more, $3 for smaller Prime orders and about $5 for non-Prime shoppers.
Part Of A 500-City Push
The Richmond rollout follows Amazon's plan to reach nearly 500 U.S. cities by year-end, a sixfold expansion of the MK30 fleet's footprint. Prime Air already serves metro areas across Florida, Louisiana, Texas, Arizona, Kansas, Michigan and Nebraska, and recent launch announcements include Metro Atlanta from a Stone Mountain hub and Cleveland. Local reaction, however, has not been unanimously enthusiastic — questions about noise, privacy and airspace remain live, following incidents such as the recent Texas pool-drop MK30 backlash.
Approvals Still Pending
Amazon said in a statement it is “working with local officials and exploring opportunities to expand our fast, reliable drone delivery service to reach customers in the Greater Richmond metro area,” and did not commit to a launch date or a specific street-level footprint. The company is still working through required federal and landlord approvals before flights begin. The MK30 quadcopter is fully electric, equipped with onboard sensors and cameras, and rated to fly in light rain and varied temperatures under FAA rules.
