BYD has unveiled what it calls China's first self-developed 4nm assisted-driving chip, the Xuanji A3, claiming the silicon supports Level 3 and Level 4 autonomous driving and is already in mass production. CEO Wang Chuanfu announced the breakthrough during the automaker's Intelligent Strategy Launch on May 28, 2026, framing it as a strategic step toward full vertical control over the company's smart-driving stack.

A 4nm Process for Mass-Market Autonomy

According to BYD, the Xuanji A3 represents "the highest level of intelligent driving chips in China." When paired with BYD's in-house algorithms used in its God's Eye ADAS system and the Xuanji architecture, the company says computing-power utilization has doubled. A three-chip configuration delivers combined performance of more than 2,100 TOPS, putting it in the same range as the most capable autonomous-driving compute platforms on the market today.

The announcement positions BYD as the only automaker in the world with full control over its assisted-driving supply chain, Chuanfu said, a vertical-integration strategy that mirrors the approach the company has taken to batteries, motors, and power electronics.

Two Decades of Semiconductor Investment

BYD established its first dedicated semiconductor department in 2002 and now operates five wafer-fabrication facilities. The company has introduced more than 2,000 chips, invested over 100 billion yuan (about $14.7 billion) into semiconductors, and assigned a team of more than 7,000 engineers to chip R&D. That scale of in-house investment is rare among global automakers, most of which still source advanced driving silicon from suppliers such as Nvidia, Qualcomm, or Mobileye.

How It Fits BYD's 2026 Tech Stack

The Xuanji A3 follows BYD's recent claims that its assisted-driving system cuts severe crash rates to one-sixth of human-driven baselines, as well as the rollout of its Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging platform, which BYD says enables CLTC range above 1,000 km and 10-minute fast charging. Together, the chip, battery, and charging upgrades mark an unusually broad refresh of a single automaker's hardware stack.

Competitive Pressure on Robotaxi Rivals

The chip launch lands as autonomous-driving competition intensifies in both China and the United States. Waymo just began offering rides in its new Zeekr-built Ojai robotaxi with a 6th-generation sensor stack, while Pony AI has raised its 2026 robotaxi fleet target to 3,500 vehicles. By owning the underlying silicon, BYD is betting it can iterate on its driver-assistance and eventual autonomy products faster, and at lower cost, than rivals dependent on external chip suppliers.

What to Watch Next

BYD has not detailed which production models will receive the Xuanji A3 first, nor disclosed which foundry produced the 4nm part. The company's prior smart-driving compute platforms have been deployed across both premium and entry-level Dynasty and Ocean series cars, suggesting a broad rollout is possible. The mass-production status announced this week implies first vehicles equipped with the chip could appear in showrooms within the current model cycle.
