CATL — the Chinese battery maker behind a large share of the world's electric cars — used its Super Tech Day 2026 to roll out six battery innovations led by a 1,500 km EV pack, a third-generation Shenxing superfast-charging cell, and the production launch of its Naxtra sodium-ion platform.
Six headline announcements
The event in Ningde positioned CATL's lineup around three priorities: range, charge speed and cost. The flagship demonstration was an EV battery with a claimed 1,500 km of driving range — a number that would push electric cars firmly into long-haul gasoline territory. The third-generation Shenxing pack is rated to charge from 10% to 90% in 6 minutes 27 seconds, while the new Naxtra sodium-ion battery moves CATL's sodium platform from lab prototype to large-scale manufacturing.
Why sodium-ion matters now
Sodium-ion chemistry trades raw energy density for lower cost, abundance of feedstock and better cold-weather performance. Bringing Naxtra into series production is a hedge against lithium and nickel volatility, particularly for grid storage and price-sensitive EV segments.
A unified charging and swapping network
CATL also unveiled an integrated solution that ties home charging, public DC fast charging and battery swapping into a single network rather than competing systems. The pitch is operational: the same packs can be topped up, fast-charged or swapped depending on where the vehicle is.
Pressure on Western automakers
