Australia's Diraq and Dell Technologies have physically wired a Dell HPC cluster into Diraq's Sydney lab to run tightly coupled quantum-classical workflows on Diraq's silicon spin qubits, the companies said this week. The tie-up lands a month after Diraq confirmed plans to deploy Australia's first data-centre-resident quantum computer inside an Equinix facility, and follows Diraq's October 2025 hybrid-AI partnership with NVIDIA.
Classical Muscle Next To The Fridge
Dell shipped a high-performance cluster directly into Diraq's Sydney facility so classical control, calibration and post-processing loops run alongside the quantum processor rather than shuttling data across the internet. Diraq CEO Andrew Dzurak said the setup lets the team "call classical AI and CPUs for the big number crunching" without the latency hit that has held back hybrid quantum workloads elsewhere.
Hybrid Is The Term Of The Day
"The term of the day is hybrid quantum-classical computing," Dell global CTO John Roese said. The first application on the joint stack is automated qubit calibration and tuning — a slow, human-heavy step that eats research time on almost every quantum machine — before broader use cases in drug discovery, logistics optimization and financial risk. Dzurak framed the technology as "potentially a bigger deal" than classical HPC because it is built on top of it, not against it.
Scaling Toward Millions Of Qubits
Diraq's silicon spin qubits are manufactured in CMOS foundries — the same lines that make consumer chips — and the company has a roadmap of thousands of qubits by 2029 in Chicago and 2+ million on a single chip by 2031. The Dell partnership adds an operational validation layer to that scaling story just as IQM ships hardware to Brazil and the DOE pours $215M into fault-tolerant quantum.
