Chinese green-tech company Envision Energy has successfully energised Morocco's first large-scale lithium-iron-phosphate (LFP) battery-storage system, a 25 MW / 125 MWh installation at OCP Group's Benguerir phosphate mine. Announced on 20 September 2026, the project is Envision's opening move in North Africa and OCP's clearest indication yet that its Green Energy subsidiary intends to run the world's largest phosphate operation on low-carbon electricity.
Deal Terms
The 25 MW / 125 MWh system delivers roughly five hours of storage and is designed for daily charge-discharge cycles over a 25-year service life. Funding of USD 20 million came from the Clean Technology Fund, administered through the African Development Bank Group. Envision supplied the full storage system and led commissioning; OCP Green Energy, headed by CEO Omar Kadir, will operate the asset alongside the phosphate site's onsite renewables.
Why Benguerir
Benguerir is one of OCP's flagship phosphate mines and the country's proving ground for a low-carbon industrial park model. Backing the site with 125 MWh of LFP storage lets OCP shift solar generation into evening loads, ride through grid disruptions and reduce diesel-genset runtime — the same use case driving hyperscaler and mining-sector deals covered in Hithium's 785Ah sodium-ion launch and Alinta's Reeves Plains 250 MW BESS.
Envision's North Africa Play
For Envision Energy, the Benguerir commissioning is a strategic beachhead. John Lee, Envision's General Manager for Middle East and Africa, positioned Morocco as the pilot for a broader regional rollout that would pair LFP storage with the country's rapidly expanding solar-and-wind base. The company earlier this quarter broke ground on a 193 MW / 386 MWh French project with Kallista, giving it an African anchor to sit alongside its European footprint.
