US defense technology company Palladyne AI and Ukrainian-Estonian drone developer NORDA Dynamics are teaming up to combine collaborative swarm coordination with combat-proven autonomous terminal guidance, the companies announced on August 27, 2026.
Two autonomy stacks, one kill chain
The integration pairs Palladyne AI's SwarmOS - a collaborative autonomy platform that lets multiple unmanned systems share situational awareness and coordinate task allocation - with NORDA's Underdog Autonomy Module, which has been fielded extensively on FPV and loitering airframes in Ukraine to provide last-mile terminal guidance when GPS and communications links are jammed.
In the combined stack, SwarmOS handles higher-level swarm behaviours (search, target detection, dynamic tasking and de-confliction) while Underdog runs the terminal engagement onboard each drone. The result, the companies say, is a swarm that can autonomously detect, track, assign and pursue targets even when the electromagnetic environment collapses - a defining characteristic of every recent frontline engagement.
Why the Ukraine track record matters
Underdog's design brief is unusual: it was iterated in the field, on Russian jamming, over a period when every US-marketed autonomy stack was still being demoed in benign RF environments. NORDA now supplies the module into multiple Ukrainian airframe families and allied prime programmes, and the Palladyne integration is a bet that the same real-world hardness can be lifted into Western swarm architectures without a lengthy hardware redesign.
The competitive backdrop
The tie-up lands in the middle of an autonomy-and-swarm arms race across NATO. AeroVironment just picked up another $50M+ U.S. Army order for lethal unmanned systems via Ondas/Mistral, AV Eagle is standing up a UAS plant in Greece, and Ukraine's DETECT GROUP is bolting direction finders onto attack drones in the same fortnight. Combining a US collaborative autonomy stack with a Ukraine-battle-hardened terminal seeker sets a template that both sides of the Atlantic are likely to copy.
What's next
Palladyne and NORDA said engineering integration is already under way, with initial demonstrations planned to show swarms operating under EW pressure. Neither company disclosed customers or contract values, but Palladyne earlier this summer inked a deal with Israel Aerospace Industries to demonstrate SwarmOS with the Harpy loitering munition - suggesting the same integration could plug into third-party airframes quickly.
