Quantum networking pioneer Qunnect and San Diego integrated-photonics company Monarch Quantum announced a strategic partnership on August 10 to accelerate the commercialization, miniaturization and scalable manufacturing of entanglement-based quantum networking hardware. The goal is a modular, ruggedized variant of Qunnect's Carina turnkey entanglement distribution platform that can drop into commercial data-center racks.
36U Rack To 2U
Carina today ships as a 36U rack panel combining Qunnect's room-temperature quantum memories, entangled photon sources and white-rabbit synchronization electronics. Under the collaboration, Monarch's integrated photonics, co-packaged optics and robotic assembly stack will consolidate hundreds of optical components into factory-aligned modules — a shrink Qunnect says can take Carina down to a 2U or 3U form factor and cut cost by "many times."
San Diego Manufacturing Ramps
Monarch will move into a 60,000 square foot San Diego facility by year-end 2026 and open an 8,000 square foot clean room in September with 20 to 25 robotic assembly stations. That capacity is aimed at trapped-ion, neutral-atom and vacancy-center quantum architectures as well as quantum sensing and secure communications.
Building The Quantum Internet Layer
Qunnect already runs entanglement networks in New York City, Berlin and Montana State University, and anchors New Mexico's ABQ-Net. The Monarch tie-up positions Carina to move beyond pilots into utility-grade deployments alongside recent moves like IonQ and Sandia's national-security co-design MOU and enQase and Light Rider's dQKD partnership. It also complements IBM's July verified-advantage claim at the compute layer by tackling the networking layer.
