OpenAI CEO Sam Altman used the September 2 episode of the Sources podcast to formally confirm what the company's recent hiring spree already suggested: OpenAI is going to build humanoid robots of its own. Asked directly whether the lab would focus on humanoids or dedicated data-center hardware, Altman answered, "We will definitely do a humanoid. We will do other form factors as well," and added that "everyone should have a personal robot."

The body is easy, the brain is hard

Altman framed anatomy as a design constraint the physical world already imposes: keyboards, doorways, factory tooling and kitchens were built for humans, so bipedal machines are the pragmatic form for general-purpose deployment. But he was blunt that mechanical engineering is the smaller problem. "I think all of that is less important than really figuring out like the brain that makes the robot work," he said, echoing the position many Chinese humanoid vendors are landing on after two years of impressive walking demos and disappointing task benchmarks.

Hires and partners hint at the roadmap

OpenAI has been quietly staffing a robotics organisation for at least twelve months, poaching senior engineers from Meta's robotics group, Nvidia's Isaac team and several stealth humanoid startups. The company already licences its foundation models to multiple humanoid vendors and last month announced expanded compute deals with CoreWeave that industry analysts read as partly earmarked for robotics simulation.

Home use is not the near-term target

Despite the "personal robot" line, Altman explicitly cautioned that home deployment is not OpenAI's first priority. Consumer environments are unstructured and safety-critical, and the company's near-term focus will more likely resemble the industrial pilots Apptronik, Robot.com and Agility Robotics are running today. That aligns with predictions from Agile Robots CEO Zhaopeng Chen and Tesla's Elon Musk that every knowledge worker will eventually have a personal robot – but only once the models can survive the messiness of a real house.

Why it matters

OpenAI entering humanoids as a first-party builder – rather than as a supplier of models to 1X, AgiBot and Figure – reshapes the competitive map. It puts direct pressure on Skild AI and Physical Intelligence, who have raised billions on the pitch of building a horizontal robot brain, and on Tesla's Optimus program, which had counted OpenAI as a distant peer rather than a rival. It also signals that whatever DevDay reveals about GPT-6 Astra's robot control capabilities will not stay on other companies' hardware for long.
