Tesla has expanded its unsupervised Robotaxi service to cover the entire Austin metropolitan area, more than doubling its operating zone from roughly 245 square miles in a single move announced on June 3, 2026. Director of Autopilot Software Ashok Elluswamy confirmed the expansion on X with three words: "Unsupervised Robotaxi now available in the greater Austin area."
Fifth Expansion, And The Largest Yet
The new geofence is roughly 12 times the size of the original 20-square-mile pilot zone Tesla opened in mid-2025. It now sweeps in suburbs Pflugerville and Manor, the I-35 corridor, Gigafactory Texas in Del Valle and Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. According to tracking site Robotaxi Tracker, Tesla still has only about 20 unsupervised vehicles working that footprint, raising legitimate questions about wait times for riders.
From Pilot To Citywide Operation
Tesla launched Robotaxi in Austin in 2025 with a tiny demo zone and human safety monitors. The company shifted to fully unsupervised rides earlier this year and has been steadily widening both the geofence and the list of cities. The current footprint puts Tesla in roughly the same league on coverage as Waymo, which has 577 robotaxis in Texas compared with Tesla's 42 across the state, even as Tesla’s effective fleet in Austin remains in the low double digits.
The Catch: Fleet Size And Remote Support
Critics point out that the geographic expansion does little to address the operational ceiling: a small fleet with reported remote-driver support means that opening up more territory could lengthen ride waits rather than improve service. CEO Elon Musk has repeatedly promised that unsupervised Tesla Full Self-Driving will be "widespread" in the United States by year-end, after pushing the timeline from late 2025 to the second half of 2026. Investors will be watching whether Tesla can pair this geographic land grab with a real fleet ramp before Waymo and Chinese rivals lock in network effects in the cities that matter most.
What Comes Next
Tesla has flagged Dallas, Houston, Miami, Phoenix, Las Vegas and the Bay Area as next markets for unsupervised Robotaxi this year.
