Uber is laying off about 3,300 people — roughly 10% of its global headcount — in what CEO Dara Khosrowshahi framed on September 2, 2026 as a bet-the-org restructuring to unbury an increasingly complex organisation and free up cash for its ride-sharing, delivery and robotaxi divisions. Bloomberg was first to report the cuts.
Fewer managers, fewer layers, no more remote
The plan trims the number of managers by 20%, with many former managers becoming individual contributors again. Teams of one or two people are being cut by 50%, and staff who sit more than seven layers below Khosrowshahi are being let go. Uber is combining its engineering, science and delivery groups and unifying its restaurant, retail and direct delivery operations. Fully remote roles will fall to under 1% of the company.
Robotaxi economics reshape the org chart
Khosrowshahi told staff the cuts are not a response to a struggling core business but a decision to strip out cost while the shift to autonomy is still catching up with ride-hailing economics. Uber has been layering robotaxi partners onto its app at speed: Waymo runs on Uber in Austin, Atlanta and Dallas, Avride has passed 100,000 autonomous rides in Dallas, and multi-city deals with Zoox, Nuro, Wayve and NVIDIA-backed Lucid are moving through onboarding. The company also just committed to 1 million drone deliveries a day with Zipline by 2029 and lined up an autonomous-trucking network with HUMAIN and Applied Intuition in Saudi Arabia.
Bigger and more expensive competition
The layoffs land as Waymo turns on paid rides in Denver, San Diego and Tampa and Tesla prepares to unveil the production Cybercab in Austin on September 3. Khosrowshahi wrote in his internal note that Uber has become 'a much larger and stronger company' but that fragmented ownership and coordination layers 'no longer serve us well at our current scale'.
