Volkswagen Launches ID.AURA T6, Its First LiDAR-Equipped EV, In China From 9,240

Volkswagen has launched the ID.AURA T6 in China from 129,900 yuan (~9,240), its first production EV with a 192-channel LiDAR wired to a Horizon Robotics Journey 6H 4nm compute chip and a CATL battery good for 660 km.

Volkswagen Launches ID.AURA T6, Its First LiDAR-Equipped EV, In China From 9,240

Volkswagen has put a LiDAR-equipped electric SUV on sale in China for the first time, launching the ID.AURA T6 on September 20, 2026 with prices starting at 129,900 yuan (~$19,240) and a hardware stack co-developed with Horizon Robotics and Xpeng.

Two Trims, One 192-Channel LiDAR

The mid-size five-seater comes in four grades — 540 Pro, 660 Pro, 660 Max and 660 Ultra — with the top two Max and Ultra variants shipping with a roof-mounted 192-channel LiDAR. That sensor talks to a 4-nanometer Horizon Robotics Journey 6H compute platform rated at 420 TOPS, running Volkswagen's urban and highway navigation-assist stack plus automated parking. Entry-level trims skip the LiDAR but keep the same CEA (China Electronic Architecture) that Volkswagen co-developed with Xpeng.

CATL Batteries, 660 km Of Range

Powertrain choices are a 59.9 kWh pack good for 540 km CLTC and a larger 77.5 kWh CATL pack that stretches range to 660 km. There is a single 170 kW (228 hp) rear motor across the lineup. The 4,811 mm-long ID.AURA T6 also carries a 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 25.8-inch AR head-up display driven by a separate 4 nm cockpit chip. Launch prices are 4.4% below pre-sales guidance, an aggressive move against BYD's Song L and Xpeng's own G6.

Why This Sensor Bill Of Materials Matters

The ID.AURA T6 is the first Volkswagen production EV to lean this hard on Chinese-domiciled AI silicon and Chinese-designed vehicle architecture. It also validates the deepened Carizon partnership that VW and Horizon Robotics announced in July, which targets Level 3 assisted-driving vehicles in China from the second half of 2027. The Journey 6H debut here also fits Horizon's push to standardize a 400+ TOPS compute tier for LiDAR-fused Chinese urban NOA that now includes in-house silicon from BYD.

The China-Local Strategy, Priced For Volume

At 129,900 yuan, Volkswagen is aiming the ID.AURA T6 squarely at the compact SUV EV segment that has become the biggest single battleground in China this year. Pairing German brand equity with a Chinese sensor and compute stack — CATL cells, Horizon compute, Xpeng-derived architecture, plus VW's chassis — is now the reference bill of materials for foreign OEMs still trying to hold share in China. A companion Dongfeng-Huawei brand, Epicland, launches its X9 SUV four days later with a different but similarly China-local formula.
