WeRide, Uber And AVOMO To Launch Spain's First Robotaxi Service In Madrid

WeRide, Uber and fleet operator AVOMO will launch Spain's first commercial robotaxi service in the Region of Madrid later this year, the three companies confirmed June 2, marking WeRide's fifth European market and its fourth city under a 15-city deployment pact with Uber.

Madrid Becomes Spain's Autonomous Test Bed

Rides will be hailed through the Uber app, with AVOMO managing the operational fleet and WeRide supplying its level-4 autonomous driving stack. The service will start with trained vehicle operators onboard, then progressively scale into fully driverless commercial operation across core urban areas as performance milestones are met, the companies said. The pilot is being coordinated with Madrid's regional government, the Comunidad de Madrid.

Fourth City Under The Uber-WeRide Pact

Madrid is the fourth of the 15 cities Uber and WeRide outlined in a previously announced agreement, with 11 more cities expected by 2030 and plans to ultimately deploy tens of thousands of robotaxis. The two companies already run fully driverless commercial services in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, with Riyadh next on the rollout list.

Europe Becomes A Robotaxi Battleground

The Madrid pilot lands the same week Uber pushed forward separate AV plans, including its 500-vehicle Ioniq 5 sensor fleet for partner deployments, and as Tesla expanded unsupervised robotaxi service across the Austin metro area. Spain joins a European robotaxi field that is rapidly opening up; for context, see our reporting on the Uber-Autobrains Munich rollout.
