Uber on June 3 unveiled the prototype data-collection vehicle that will anchor its new AV Labs division and disclosed plans to deploy 500 of the sensor-packed cars globally over the rest of 2026, the company told TechCrunch in an exclusive. The vehicle is a Hyundai Ioniq 5 retrofitted with a dense sensor stack and is the first vehicle Uber has assembled itself since selling its self-driving unit to Aurora in 2020.
14 cameras, 8 lidars, 9 radars, and Nvidia Drive Thor
Each Ioniq 5 carries 14 cameras, eight solid-state lidar sensors and nine radars, integrated by Michigan-based Roush Performance which is handling the retrofits. All sensor streams are routed through Nvidia's Drive Thor automotive compute platform. Uber said it expects 50 of the vehicles to be on the road by the summer and the full 500-unit fleet operating throughout 2026, generating around 2 million miles per month of high-fidelity, time-synchronized 360-degree data.
Data as the moat for a 30-partner robotaxi platform
The new fleet feeds AV Labs, a division Uber launched in January 2026 to gather and share real-world data with the company's 30-and-counting autonomous driving partners, a roster that includes Waymo, WeRide and Avride. Uber's pitch is to develop the world's most geographically diverse training dataset for autonomous driving — a 360-degree, time-synchronized stitched view that partners can use to train and validate self-driving stacks. The company says it already has a head start: thousands of specially equipped vehicles deployed across dozens of cities and additional data from hundreds of Lucid Air cars operating in the U.S. and Europe over the past two years.
The bet beneath the launch
The unveil reframes Uber's autonomy posture from passive marketplace to active enabler. Where competitors burn billions on first-party stacks, Uber is selling something all of them need — the geographically diverse, sensor-rich training corpus that data-starved AV programs are still scrambling to build. The Ioniq sensor configuration is explicitly modular, with Uber noting it will continue to update the suite as partner needs evolve.
The fleet rollout follows a wave of recent Uber autonomy moves, including the Haneda humanoid pilot adjacencies, and lands alongside Tesla's Austin metro robotaxi expansion and Texas DMV robotaxi fleet disclosures showing Waymo at 577 vehicles.
