Autonomous Solutions, the Utah retrofit-and-orchestration specialist that has been running mines and proving grounds on autopilot for two decades, has quietly stood up what it says is the largest autonomous vehicle fleet in the history of American sugarcane farming. Working with U.S. Sugar and Everglades Equipment Group, ASI has put more than John Deere tractors across 255,000 acres of South Florida on its Mobius platform in full production — not a pilot.
Full Production, Not A Demo
The deployment spans five South Florida counties and around 103,000 hectares of sugarcane. ASI CEO Mel Torrie framed the win around a specific economic lever: autonomous fleets remove the constraint that turns a weather event into an economic one. Cane harvesting is famously narrow-windowed and labour-hungry; running John Deere tractors on Mobius lets U.S. Sugar and Everglades keep the beds prepped and the trucks moving well past the point where human crews would rack up overtime or simply run out of daylight.
Vendor-Agnostic Retrofit Approach
ASI's calling card since it spun out of Utah State University in 2000 has been vendor independence. Mobius is not tied to one OEM; the same fleet-orchestration stack runs Komatsu haul trucks, John Deere row-crop tractors and Peterbilt logistics trucks. The retrofit kits sit on top of an existing platform rather than replacing it, which is what let U.S. Sugar move at scale rather than replacing the fleet — a very different economics model from clean-sheet autonomy plays.
Where It Sits In The AV Landscape
Agriculture has been quietly moving faster than on-road autonomy: closed-course, geo-fenced fields, low speeds and cooperative operators erase most of the failure modes that keep robotaxi programs conservative. That fits with a broader wave of announcements this quarter, from Waymo's push into Las Vegas as its 15th robotaxi market to Aurora and Volvo's driverless Dallas-Oklahoma City truck route and Pony.ai and GAC's Gen-4 L4 robotruck reveal.
Next Steps
Torrie has hinted that construction and defence adjacencies are next on the Mobius roadmap, with ASI's SoftBank-linked construction unit already ramping in Silicon Slopes. The company remains privately held and is not commenting on revenue tied to the sugarcane deployment.
