South Korean mobility company IL has launched the ILBOT L1 MAX, an autonomous quadruped robot built for industrial sites that can sprint at up to 28 km/h on flat ground and switch to legged walking on stairs, slopes and rough terrain, as the company expands its physical-AI platform business.

A hybrid wheeled-legged platform

The L1 MAX combines the rough-terrain capability of a conventional walking quadruped with the high-speed mobility of a wheeled robot. On flat surfaces it rolls at highway-parking-lot speeds, then transitions to quadruped walking mode when it meets stairs, inclines or obstacles, giving it continuous mobility across the mixed environments found in data centers, power plants, factories and logistics centers.

Built to see and inspect

Equipped with long-range LiDAR, thermal-imaging sensors and high-resolution optical cameras, the ILBOT L1 MAX performs autonomous patrol and equipment inspection, flagging anomalies such as overheating components or intrusions. IL frames the robot less as a standalone machine and more as a "mobile physical-AI platform" that collects and analyzes site data as it moves, feeding a growing repository of industrial operating data.

Part of a robot ecosystem

IL plans to link the L1 MAX with its ILBOT C2 humanoid, already deployed at manufacturing sites, into a single operating structure: the quadruped handles movement, reconnaissance and inspection while the humanoid performs hands-on tasks. The strategy mirrors a broader industry push toward multi-robot fleets and patrol platforms, seen in deployments like Boston Dynamics' Spot patrolling data centers and Massimo Group's MAMO patrol platform.

From robot sales to data and services

Rather than selling robots outright, IL says it intends to grow into a physical-AI platform company built on repeatedly accumulated manufacturing, logistics, energy and plant data, expanding into robot-as-a-service and physical-AI solutions. The model echoes the data-and-deployment focus driving heavy-industry automation entrants such as Burro's Grande 44 platform.
