SpaceX suffered a rare post-ignition abort on Monday morning when the nine Merlin engines of its Falcon 9 rocket lit briefly on Pad SLC-4E before shutting down, forcing the company to scrub the Starlink 17-39 mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base and marking its second Vandenberg scrub in less than a week.

Liftoff had been scheduled for 7:49 a.m. PDT (14:49 UTC) with 24 Starlink V2 Mini broadband satellites aboard a Falcon 9 flying its 85th launch of the year, according to Spaceflight Now. Booster tail number B1082 was set for a 23rd flight after prior missions including NROL-145, USSF-62 and OneWeb Launch 20, targeting the drone-ship "Of Course I Still Love You" for a 212th recovery on that vessel. SpaceX offered no immediate technical detail beyond the abort itself; the company routinely reflies boosters after such shutdowns once inspections complete.

A rough week for the Falcon fleet

The scrub follows last week's Starship Flight 13 abort at Starbase and comes as SpaceX pushes to keep pace with a launch tempo now dominated by Starlink deployment - 67 of this year's 85 Falcon 9 flights have supported the broadband constellation, which passed 10,800 spacecraft in orbit this month. Rivals continue to lag: SpaceX carried 81 payloads on a single Transporter-17 rideshare earlier this month, and Blue Origin's New Glenn return-to-flight preparations remain incomplete.

Constellation, contracts and cadence

The Starlink 17-39 pause is unlikely to dent SpaceX's 2026 trajectory, but each Vandenberg scrub costs cadence on West Coast missions that carry both Starlink batches and national security payloads. The company is scheduled to try again as soon as the next available launch window, with a follow-on Starlink flight from Cape Canaveral queued behind. Starship Flight 13, aborted July 16, will separately fold in the first Starlink V3 satellite deployment when it retries.
