Tokyo-based TIER IV, the pioneer behind the open-source Autoware autonomous-driving stack, has joined Open Invention Network 2.0, the freshly-expanded patent non-aggression framework for Linux and adjacent open-source software.

Why This Matters For Autoware

OIN provides a global patent cross-licence covering a defined Linux System, and its members grant one another royalty-free rights to those patents. OIN 2.0, launched in January 2026, broadens what counts as the Linux System — a change that pulls modern automotive and AI stacks into the umbrella.

For TIER IV, that matters because Autoware is built on Linux and ROS, and is now being embedded by automakers, Tier-1 suppliers and semiconductor makers in commercial Level 4 platforms. Joining OIN 2.0 gives partners a cleaner patent posture around Autoware and lowers the litigation risk of building on top of it.

An Expanding Open-Source Ecosystem

TIER IV has led Autoware development since 2015 and has spent 2026 stitching together an unusually broad open-source ecosystem: an Isuzu Level 4 bus program on NVIDIA DRIVE Hyperion, an open AI-native computing platform with Renesas' R-Car Gen 5 automotive SoCs and a slot in Japan's JST edge-AI semiconductor R&D program aimed at open-sourcing chip designs for autonomous driving.

TIER IV framed the move as pairing open-source stewardship with a defensive patent strategy that lets partners adopt Autoware with confidence.
