Shanghai-based Matrix Robotics rolled out its third-generation MATRIX-3 humanoid, an upgraded WAVE Physical World Foundation Model and a new MATRIX Global Partner Program at WAIC 2026, marking the clearest attempt yet by a Chinese Physical AI startup to jump from stage demos to global commercial deployment. Four hardware-identical MATRIX-3 units performed live tasks side-by-side across four scenarios at the Shanghai expo, backed by a single general-purpose foundation model.

WAVE 2 Locks In A Brain-Cerebellum Architecture

Matrix Robotics' self-developed WAVE Physical World Foundation Model is purpose-built for physical robots rather than internet text. It runs a proprietary "brain-cerebellum" architecture in which WAVE handles global scene understanding, task planning and generalized operations while a separate general-purpose motion control model produces natural whole-body movement. Trained on large-scale real-world and simulated interaction data, WAVE lets MATRIX-3 adapt to complex tasks without the fixed scripts that constrain traditional humanoids, and the company is building a data flywheel from every real-robot deployment.

MATRIX-3 Hardware Built For Commercial Duty

MATRIX-3 stands 1.70 meters tall, weighs 65 kilograms, and pairs a 27-DOF tendon-driven dexterous hand with 3D-knitted biomimetic safety skin. Whole-body distributed tactile sensing hits 0.1 N fingertip precision, enabling safe close-proximity work with people, and the robot runs 4 hours per session — enough for a full commercial shift. Matrix Robotics is priced from RMB 580,000 (about $80,000) per unit and leans on the company's Zhangjiang MFH Smart Manufacturing Base, which is targeting 5,000 units in 2026 and 10,000 in 2027.

Live Demos: Barista, Handshake, Fine Manipulation, Gait

At WAIC, MATRIX-3 worked as an autonomous AI barista, running a coffee machine with multimodal perception and force-controlled hands. It played rock-paper-scissors and finger dances with visitors under WAVE-driven emotional response, grasped fruit and bottled water in a fine manipulation zone, and walked the floor with coordinated humanoid gait, pausing to deliver product introductions to attendees. The four zones were chosen to validate deployment value in commercial services, cultural tourism, science education and household assistance.

A Global Partner Program Alongside Other WAIC Humanoids

Matrix Robotics also unveiled its MATRIX Global Partner Program to recruit regional partners in China and overseas markets that hold customer networks, government relationships and local delivery capacity. Roughly 1,000 robot orders have been booked across chain restaurants, hotels, research and culture use cases. The push lands alongside a wave of humanoid launches at Shanghai — including AgiBot's four-product blitz, X-Humanoid's Tiangong platform, Keenon's XMAN-R1 and MagicLab's MagicBot — that make WAIC 2026 the biggest embodied AI showcase to date.
