The US Department of Commerce on Monday finalized a CHIPS and Science Act R&D award of up to $100 million to Quantinuum, cementing the only trapped-ion architecture selected under the program's fault-tolerant quantum computing track.
What The $100M Buys
The award targets what Quantinuum calls the toughest bottlenecks in scaling fault-tolerant trapped-ion systems: low-loss integrated photonics, specialty semiconductors that survive cryogenic operating temperatures, and reliable optical components at the wavelengths its ytterbium and barium ions actually use.
GlobalFoundries And Monarch Quantum Join The Supply Chain
Quantinuum will run the ion-trap fabrication effort with GlobalFoundries on 300mm wafers at its Malta, NY fab, while Monarch Quantum will build out the laser and free-space optics stack. The company said the funding also underwrites metrology work with NIST to characterize cryogenic dielectric materials.
Second Federal Anchor In A Month
The CHIPS finalization follows a wave of Quantinuum activity, including the recent Aramco MoU on industrial quantum computing and Germany's Jülich JION trapped-ion launch. Rivals D-Wave and Rigetti also secured smaller CHIPS equity stakes this week, but Quantinuum remains the trapped-ion pick.
Why It Matters
Scaling ion traps beyond a few hundred qubits requires photonic integration and cryogenic control electronics that today's semiconductor supply chains do not produce at volume. Anchoring both to US foundries is the point of the award, especially as Beijing pushes its own quantum and AI compute plan.
