
Rocket Lab has successfully launched its ninth dedicated mission for Japanese Earth-observation company Synspective, deploying another Strix synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite into low Earth orbit. The flight, named "Viva La Strix," lifted off on an Electron rocket from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand at 9:33 p.m. local time on May 22, 2026, and placed the spacecraft into a 572-kilometer (355-mile) orbit.
Another satellite for Synspective's radar constellation
The newly launched Strix satellite expands Synspective's growing constellation of SAR imaging spacecraft. Unlike optical satellites, synthetic aperture radar can see through cloud cover and capture imagery in any lighting conditions, including total darkness. Tokyo-based Synspective uses the data for urban development planning, construction and infrastructure monitoring, and disaster response. The "Strix" name is a nod to a widespread genus of owls, reflecting the satellites' ability to observe the planet day or night.
A long-running launch partnership
Rocket Lab has served as Synspective's sole launch provider since 2020. With 18 additional missions already booked, the company is set to deliver the remainder of the constellation to orbit before 2030. Rocket Lab has highlighted that its tailored launch approach for each Strix deployment is a defining feature of the partnership and has helped maintain a 100% mission success rate for the customer's satellites.
Electron's continued cadence
The 59-foot-tall (18-meter) Electron, which debuted in 2017, gives small satellites dedicated rides to orbit rather than sharing space on larger rockets. That dedicated model has made Electron one of the most active small launch vehicles in the world, and the steady stream of Synspective missions underscores the demand for responsive, repeatable access to space among commercial Earth-observation operators.
Part of a busy stretch for the industry
The launch comes during an especially active period for the space sector.
